Politicians and pollsters watching 2016 RNC closely

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The 2016 Republican National Convention is less here and Michigan lawmakers are ready to get things started.

State Senator Rick Jones says he thinks Michigan could be a battle ground state in the race to the white house.

“I think Michigan is going to be in play during this race,” Jones said. “I think Ohio and Michigan are key to the success of the next president.”

And while Jones thinks Michigan could be key in choosing the next president, the next president could also be key to Michigan.

Epic MRA president and pollster Bernie Porn says republicans could lose the state house if Trump doesn’t win over voters.

“If in fact there is a down ballot effect because Donald Trump is not running well in Michigan, that could effect the Michigan House of Representatives,” Porn said.

So what does Donald Trump need to do to have a leg up on the campaign trail?

“I think the biggest concern of the nation right now is all the terrorism in the world and I think that people want our borders secured to have a safer nation,” Jones said.

And while it’s yet to be seen if Trump will be that person to make our nation safer, Porn says the fact that there is still unrest in the republican party is unusual.

“In a poll just released today nationally, it indicated that only 38 percent of republicans nationally are satisfied with their nominee,” Porn said.

He says even our own governor Rick Snyder seems to be staying away from the campaign.

“He has not come out and endorsed Donald Trump and I would expect that he probably won’t,” Porn said. “I think that he will probably follow Governor Kasich’s lead.”

Porn expects the nomination to go smoothly, but says only time will tell what happens next.
