Possible lead scare at a East Lansing elementary school

EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) – “When you look at that, it’s a small sticker probably two by two on the back of a fountain,” said East Lansing Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Robyne Thompson.

A sticker nobody noticed for twenty years was the first clue that action needed to be taken.  It stated “flush this faucet each day to reduce lead levels to acceptable health limits.”   East Lansing Public Schools administration sent out the letter and immediately turned off the sink while water samples were taken.  One of the four samples taken exceeded the federal level of 15 parts per billion.  Three other levels taken after the water was flushed for more than two minutes did not exceed that level.

Superintendent Thompson believes getting out in front was the best course of action, “I’m sensitive to all that’s going on, particularly in Flint and my heart goes out to that community.  Certainly we’re not going to take this lightly.  We are working with the health department.  There will be more information coming out to parents in regards to the next steps.”

Parents believe taking steps was necessary especially after the crisis in Flint.

Former Parent Council Member for Glencairn Elementary School Dichondra Johnson says, “I’m glad they did inform the parents because people get to talking.  That way they can share the facts and not let rumor and panic take over in the schools.”

“Well, it seems like they have been proactive about taking measures to test the water and be in communication with the parents and I think you know our school…we are confident.  Mrs.  Ware, the principal, has everything under control,” according to Cassie Thornburg who has several children attending Glencairn Elementary School.

The next steps will be in announced in a couple days.  They will be replacing faucet pipes on Saturday.
