Preps underway ahead of 2016 East Lansing Art Festival

EAST LANSING, (Mich.) – The 53rd Annual East Lansing Art Festival kicks off in East Lansing this weekend.

The East Lansing Art Festival. It’s a popular experience for thousands of artists and art lovers alike.

“We are one of the top 100 art festivals in the country and I think we got about 180 vendors from all over the United States and people literally come from all over the United States to check out the art festival,” said Benjamin Hall with the East Lansing Art Festival.

Anna Weis of Big Rapids is one of the few emerging artists at the festival.

She actually won her very own booth.

It’s an opportunity Weis says she’s very grateful for.

“It means a huge opportunity. There is no way I would be able to afford a booth like this otherwise, so it’s really a major jumping off point for me,” said Weis.

But for established artist Joan Schulte of Louisville, Kentucky the art festival scene gets more cut-throat every year.

“You have to jury into every art festival and i may do really well here, but then next year, I have to send them images again give them an artist statement and they’ll have new jurors and they’ll look at my art work and they may not like it next year,” said Schulte.

But festival organizers say finding quality artists makes this festival so successful as does the hard work and commitment from the local community year after year.

The East Lansing Art Festival opens Saturday at 10 a.m., and runs through Sunday.
