BROOKLYN, Mich. (WLNS) – With hundreds of thousands of people coming to Brooklyn for all of the festivities, local businesses are booming.
Cars are coming in left and right to stores as race weekend kicks off. Workers at Country Market say they look forward to this time every year.
“We definitely bulk up on everything that we have, people wise, product wise, everything,” said Cassie Fuller, the Assistant Store Manager at Brooklyn Country Market.
Fuller says a normal weekend brings in about 1,800 customers a day. But this weekend, they’re expecting 3,000 customers a day or more.
“It’s pretty exciting. I mean it’s just fun all around basically,” said Fuller.
Shelby Hayes is a manager at the Wesco Gas Station in town.
“We’ve been so busy,” said Hayes.
She says weekends like this one are important for business to keep the store afloat during the slow winter months.
“This (weekend), Faster Horses, and our other race in August that really like boost us up for the rest of the year for our slow periods where we don’t have as many attractions going on,” said Hayes.
As traffic flows through the village, Hayes is ready to make sure visitors have what they need.
“It’s a small town so it’s interesting to see,” said Hayes. “Sometimes the locals kind of hide out in their homes for a little while because traffic is crazy.”
Cindy Hubbell, who works for the Brooklyn-Irish Hills Chamber of Commerce, says this time of year is crucial for the entire Irish Hills community, seeing people come from all over the country who wouldn’t normally come to the area.
“It’s really important for M.I.S. to be here to bring the different events into the area for the businesses,” said Hubbell.
Races will be taking place all weekend and businesses only expect it to get busier and busier.
