Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Nassar Survivor Amanda Thomashow call for Title IX changes

Amanda Thomashow showed up to Eaton County Court today in the Lou Anna K Simon case, but was also U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin’s guest to President Trump’s State of the Union Address.

Slotkin’s appearance comes just a week after she sent a letter to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos about her propsed Title IX changes.

“Instead of learning from the lessons we experienced here in Michigan she is going backwards in the wrong directions,” said Rep. Slotkin.

Slotkin added that she’s just simply not listening to people.

“She needs to listen to people, real people, and she needs to change the legislation to that it’s easier to hold institutions accountable, not harder, so it’s easier for people to come forward, not harder, and I think to me is the guiding principle and she’s just not hearing it right now,” said Rep. Slotkin.

Thomashow, along with Slotkin, wore teal ribbons to the State of the Union Address, representing sexual assault survivors. She says there’s a lot that institutions need to work on, but they at least need to start somewhere to get things started in the right direction.

“Instead of meeting with the three percent of people that are falsely accused, meeting with the 70, or 97 percent of women who report sexual assault truthfully, that would be a great start,” said Thomashow.

Slotkin says that the nation is looking at Michigan right now on how to solve the sexual assault issue and it starts with holding people responsible.

‘We’re the example right now, and we’re the focus and we need to do the right thing, set a positive example, for the rest of the country and we can do that if leaders take responsibility for their actions,”

Coming into the State of the Union Address, Slotkin says she wanted to see some sort of plan for action, and not just talk of it.

“We’ve had a lot of talk the past couple year, but I actually want to see actually and that means more to me than anything that is said,” said Rep. Slotkin.
