LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Black Friday has come and gone and now people are ready to shop small.

Today is “Small Business Saturday,” a day when people support local businesses and for Lansing’s Old Town, this annual shopping means a lot for local retailers.

It’s a small town…quaint…the feeling of nostalgia when you walk down the street…it’s Lansing’s Old Town.

For local shops including “Old Town’s General Store,” “Small Business Saturday” means more than just an increase in sales, it builds comradery in the community.

“We look forward to this holiday season, this is a really nice way to really kick it off,” said Old Town General Store Owner Maria VanAtta.

From craft beer and wines, cookware, to even bumper stickers for your car…VanAtta says the variety of Michigan-made products always brings customers back for more.

“It’s important to me to bring community together and I think when you sell Michigan products, it brings everyone in,” VanAtta stated.

If shoppers are looking for a unique sense of style or trinkets and charms, “Polka Dot Boutique” is the place to go.

“They’re supporting not only our local economy but you know also people like me who still live in the community and make a living by owning a business like this,” Polka Dot Boutique Store Owner Jennifer Hinze said.

Although sales nearly triple for the boutique during the holiday weekend, Hinze says its meeting new customers that make each day rewarding.

“You never know who you’re going to meet day to day,” Hinze stated.

And just down the street from Polka Dots is “Lambs Gate Antiques,” an eclectic shop where people can find vintage knick-knacks and home décor.

But there’s one thing these businesses have in common…sure, they all thrive on special days like today but it’s the sense of community that makes Old Town stand out.

“They go to the malls for the discounts and the televisions and the big ticket items that Black Friday is all about but we’re the neighborhood again that they like to remember, the nostalgia and they just enjoy being here,” Lambs Gate Antiques Co-Partner Cindy Heine said.
