LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – The annual “Snaketivity” display hasn’t even been erected on the grounds of the State Capitol and already controversy is boiling.

This is the third year that The Satanic Temple of Detroit has applied for a permit to put a display on the grounds during the holiday season.

The display, a large snake wrapped around a Leviathan’s cross with an open book, is topped by a glowing pentagram.

It includes the message “The Greatest Gift is the Gift of Knowledge”.

“We have no interest in proselytizing Satanism to the public,” says Jex Blackmore, head of The Satanic Temple’s Executive Council. “However, we refuse to allow one religious perspective do dominate the discourse. For that reason, When there is one religious display on public grounds, we’ll offer another, and we urge other minority voices to do the same.”

The group has applied to have the display on the grounds from December 15-18.

The Catholic League has issued a statement condemning the display, saying the Satanic Temple is only attacking Christianity by putting up the display.

An application for a nativity display has been requested for December 15-21.
