Spartans Crack Buckeyes; Move On In Big Ten Tourney

(WLNS) – This has been a roller coaster season for the MSU Spartans so it was difficult to guess which Spartan team would show up for Friday night’s game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Big Ten tourney in Chicago. It had been six days since the Spartans last game and they came into the tourney as a number three seed. The Spartans were looking to defend their title from last year and that defense couldn’t have started any better against the listless Buckeyes.

In the first half the Spartans jumped out to an 8-point lead with big man Matt Costello adding some jump shots to the scoring attack. It’s unusual to see Costello shooting from long-range but he was on target. MSU took that 8-point lead into the halftime break and came out of the locker room ready to light up the place in the second half. Spartan Travis Trice dialed in his 3-point range and extended the MSU lead to 12 with 3:30 left in the game.

That’s when the Buckeyes realized they were playing a basketball game. When Sam Thompson slashed through the Spartan defense for a layup, MSU’s lead was cut to seven points. At that point the Spartans put their collective foot on the gas when Trice dished off to Brandon Dawson and he converted the easy lay-in. 76-67 is your final score and now the Spartans take on Maryland in the tourney semi-final Saturday.

6 Sports Audrey Dahlgren will be in Chicago and she’ll have updates from the game online and on 6 News. You can watch the game right here on WLNS beginning at 3:25 p.m. Saturday.
