Suspect arrested after 2 Lansing-area bank robberies

LANSING, MI (WLNS)- Two bank robberies just 15 minutes apart were reported this morning on Cedar Street in Ingham County.

The first, around 9:15 at the First Merit Bank in Delhi Township.

The second, at the Comerica branch just up the road in Lansing.

Witnesses at both locations told police a blue SUV was involved, and a license plate number reported lead police to a home and eventual stand-off on Bensch Street in Lansing.

Around 10:30am, deputies from the Ingham County Sheriffs department, Lansing Police, and Michigan State Police surrounded a home on the 1000 block of Bensch St. near Cedar in Lansing.

Officers and deputies had guns drawn and shields out.

“Officers set up on the house. We were able to locate a vehicle which matched the description.” Sergeant Chris Baldwin of Lansing Police department said.

According to Sergeant Chris Baldwin, when police arrived they learned that more than one person was inside the home.

“Open the front door, and come out one at a time” LPD officers said through a speaker as they urged the suspect to come out.

After nearly half an hour, one man and three women came out of the building, with their hands up, and walking backwards. Meanwhile, the suspect stayed inside.

“If you have a phone and you would like to call, you can call our dispatch” LPD officers said through a speaker.

After more than an hour, police entered the home with shields and guns drawn.

“Hey come out with your hands up” Lansing Police Department officials said while stepping into the house.

“He was behind a closed door we breached the door and there he was injured, self-inflicted” Sergeant Baldwin said.

According to officials, while police were inside they negotiated with the man for a few minutes, after knocking down a door, they found him with self-inflicted wounds.

Medics were called, and when the man was rolled out of the home on a stretcher, a knife was visibility in his body, but he was still alive.

According to Baldwin, the suspect has been taken to a local hospital where he will be treated before he’s put behind bars.

The four people inside the home were taken in for questioning, but are not believed to be involved with the crime. Police believe only the male suspect was involved in the bank robberies, and he may be linked to other recent robberies in the Lansing area.

According to officials the FBI have been called to investigate this case, and official charges should be coming in next few days.
