This Morning: Lawmakers return to Lansing for 100th session

News

It’s a big day for lawmakers in Lansing and they’re looking to get the ball rolling on a whole host of issues for 2019.

Today history will be made as Garlin Gilchrist II will be the first African American to preside over the state senate.

In addition, more than 50 women will represent our state in the legislature this year.

Though Republicans still have control, Democrats picked up seats in both the House and Senate.

Leaders on both sides say they’re ready and willing to work with members of the opposite party.

One issue to keep an eye on early is the state’s multi-billion dollar budget.

Lawmakers will need to decide how Michigan will spend it’s money.

The session starts today with full weeks scheduled until the end of March.
