Thousands celebrate Independence Day in downtown Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – It’s been 240 years since our nation was founded and the birthday celebration was a big one this year as thousands celebrated Independence Day in downtown Lansing.

“Fourth of July means independence and freedom and pride for being an American,” said grace Mellberg.

“To me it means freedom it shows our country is independent and we can do things on our own,” said   Neil Mattson.

It was a night filled with music, games and fireworks in downtown Lansing as thousands wished America a very happy birthday.

Brett Kaschinske with the city of Lansing explains why this year’s Fourth of July celebrations are extra special to him.

“We see our independence and see people trying to strike against the freedom we have as we see those events in the news and we always have to celebrate the independence we have,” said Brett Kaschinske with Lansing Parks and Recreation.

And as people got ready to celebrate safety was on the mind of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.

“Completely safe this place is totally checked in all the bags are being searched its very secure here,” said Bernero.

But lots of the people we talked to today say the meaning behind the festivities is the most important part of the holiday.

“I think it’s important for Americans to know that this is our nation’s birthday and that we are Americans and that we need to be proud of it,” said Marilyn Mantek of Jackson.

Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the 4th of July in downtown Lansing.

The annual parade featured clowns, cars, musicians, dance troupes, community groups, as well as members of local police and fire departments and members of the military.

Crowds lined the streets to watch. Many of them carrying American flags – and many of them dressed in red, white, and blue as well.

It’s part of the Capital City’s traditional Independence Day celebrations.

America’s 240th birthday continues tonight with a concert at 8 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.

Both events take place at the Adado Riverfront Park.
