DETROIT, Mich (WLNS) – Opening day in Detroit is like an unofficial holiday across the state of Michigan.
A lot of fanfare at Comerica Park in the 17th opener in this ballpark.
Kirk Gibson came down from the broadcast booth and after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch he posed for a picture with Tiger manager Brad Ausmus.
To the game and the Tigers drew first blood in the first inning, a base hit to right by who else? Miguel Cabrera scored Ian Kinsler made it 1-nothing Tigers.
In the 3rd inning Miggy trying to extend the lead but here is the defensive play of the game: Yankee rightfielder Aaron Hicks with a terrific diving catch to keep it a 1-run ballgame.
Now to the Tiger 4th and a good piece of hitting by Jose Iglesias, a golf shot single to right with the bases loaded that scored a run to make it 3-zip.
Meantime the Tigers’ new acquisition for the starting rotation could not have been much better. Jordan Zimmerman, who signed a $110 million contract, made his cash today with 7 innings with just 2 hits allowed and he got a huge ovation as he left the game.
For insurance Miguel Cabrera went the opposite way for a home run and a 4-nothing Tiger lead.
Just a happy day at the ballpark all around, Tigers win their 8th straight home opener, 4 to nothing and they are now 3-and-0 on the new season.
