UPDATE (2:00 p.m.) – The two emergency workers in the ambulance that crashed this morning are hospitalized in serious condition this afternoon.
6 News has learned that the passenger in the ambulance, Rick Hallman, is Lansing City Councilmember Carol Wood’s nephew. Wood tells 6 News that her nephew is in surgery for serious arm injuries and is still awaiting surgery on a back injury.
The crash remains under investigation and this story will be updated as more information becomes available.
UPDATE (11:40 a.m.) – Michigan State Police say the driver of a car has died and two emergency workers are injured after a crash that sent an ambulance off a bridge and into waist-deep water of a creek below.
State police spokesman Lt. David Kaiser says the Mobile Medical Response ambulance was heading back to the station for shift change early Monday when it apparently ran a stop sign in Saginaw County and collided with the car. He says two emergency workers inside were hospitalized in serious condition.
Kaiser says the car’s driver 21-year-old Dustin Sharp of Burt died following the crash.
The ambulance ended up on its side in Misteguay Creek.
The crash happened near the border of Maple Grove and Albee townships, about 70 miles northwest of Detroit.
MAPLE GROVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP/WLNS) – Michigan State Police say injuries are reported after an ambulance collided with another vehicle and went off a bridge over a creek.
State police spokesman Lt. David Kaiser tells The Associated Press that he was heading to the scene of Monday morning’s crash in Saginaw County. He said he didn’t have details about the extent of injuries, but expected to have an update later Monday morning.
Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel tells WNEM-TV that the department sent a dive team to the bridge, which crosses Misteguay Creek. He says state police are in charge of the investigation. Firefighters from Maple Grove and Albee townships also responded.
WNEM-TV tells 6 News that victims are being airlifted by helicopter to a local hospital.
WJRT-TV reports the crash scene is located near the border of Maple Grove and Albee townships, about 70 miles northwest of Detroit.
