UPDATE: 3 dead, 1 critical in accident on I-496; victims identified


UPDATE (2:25 p.m.) – The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the three people who died in a 3-car crash last night on I-496. The victims are Kelly McNamara, 59, of Lansing, Linda Foote, 66, of Lansing and Kevin Trusty, 57, of Lansing. The crash occurred after a vehicle was attempting to assist a disabled vehicle on the side of I-496 westbound between Waverly and Snow Roads. The vehicle pulled out into the path of oncoming vehicles. A total of nine people were taken to local hospitals and one person remains in critical condition.

UPDATE (5:30 a.m.) – A third person has died of injuries suffered in a three-car crash last night on I-496. Two people had died earlier last night and the third died in a local hospital. A fourth person remains in critical condition and three other people are being treated for injuries.

Names of the victims have not been released.

An investigation continues into the cause of the accident that shut down westbound I-496 for hours after it happened just before 9:00 p.m.

EATON COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) – Police shut down westbound I-496 for hours Tuesday night for a three car accident that left at least two people dead.

Eaton County sheriff’s officials say it happened just before 9 p.m. between Waverly and Snow Roads.

One of the three vehicles involved had at least seven people in it at the time of the accident

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday night there were two people in critical condition and 4 others had to be taken to the hospital.

Officials say seat belts were not being used, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
