UPDATE (3:45 p.m.) – 6 News spoke with police Friday, as the search continued for a suspect who allegedly shot a child and two teens Thursday night.
Public Information Director for the Lansing Police Department Robert Merritt told 6 News the scene was chaotic when police arrived around 10 p.m. Thursday.
“There was people scattering, running and leaving the area,” Merritt said.
When officers arrived, they found two young girls, ages 11 and 13, and a 19-year-old boy with apparent gunshot wounds.
Witnesses told police a large crowd of mostly teens and kids was hanging out oustide when a fight broke out; the yelling turned physical, and then a man fired a gun into the crowd.
“It’s unclear at this point if the person was aiming at a particular person, or what their motive was,” Merritt said.
Police say they’ve gotten conflicting descriptions of the suspect, and those who didn’t run from the scene we’re shaken up.
“When you’ve got a teenager or younger children involved in being shot, you’ve got parents you’ve got neighbors, you’ve got a very traumatic situation,” Merritt said.
According to police, the chaotic nature of the shooting makes finding the truth in this case, even more difficult.
“I do know that there was a lot more people that were there, that weren’t there when the police got there, so I would ask those people to come forward, you know give us some information, and help us out with bringing the person responsible to justice,” Merritt said.
All three who were shot are expected to recover from their wounds.
