UPDATE: Highway re-open after hours-long shutdown

UPDATE: Police say highway traffic is back to normal along U.S. 127 and I-496 after an accident shut down the roads for more than 8 hours.

They say a semi crashed into an embankment around 8:30 a.m. The driver was heading south on U.S. 127 when he lost control, went into the media, and then into the embankment near the railroad tracks.

He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. The roads fully re-opened after 5 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: A major accident has tied up U.S. 127 near the intersection of I-496 for several hours. 

An alert went out from East Lansing police around 11:15 a.m. warning people about the tied up.

More than 3 hours later, the 6 News Traffic Tracker shows southbound 127 at a standstill.
