UPDATE: Man killed in crash after short police chase in St. Johns is identified

UPDATE: (Wednesday 9:10 a.m.) – The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed in a crash Tuesday on St. Johns.  Israel Dealmeida, 38, of St. Johns died when he drove his vehicle into the backend of a semi-truck trailer following a short police chase.  The driver of the truck was not injured.

UPDATE (3:40 p.m.) – The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more information on the chase that ended in a fatal crash.

Investigators say just before 11:45 a.m. today a car was pulled over on Business US-127 near Taft Road. 

Deputies believed the driver was wanted for felony warrants and, after initially stopping, the driver took off northbound on  Business US-127.

The pursuit lasted about two minutes and included help from the St. Johns Police who twice put stop sticks on the road, but those did not stop the fleeing driver.

After a short chase the driver slammed into the back of a parked semi-truck and trailer.

Witnesses told investigators that it appeared the driver could have avoided the truck but sped up and drove straight into the trailer.

The driver of the car died at the scene and there were no other injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY – A man is dead after crashing his car into the back of a semi truck in St. Johns.

The incident happened around noon and has closed northbound Business US-127 near Townsend Road.

According to the Clinton County Sherif’s Department, the crash took place in front of the Wheel Inn during a short police chase. 

The northbound lanes will be closed until further notice while investigators are on the scene.
