WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL/AP) – Ahead of President Obama’s final State of the Union address, the White House is using both social media and the power of traditional television to showcase the administration’s last year in office.

During an interview, aired during NBC’s Today show Tuesday morning, President Obama candidly discussed his experience delivering the national address in years past and what he hopes to accomplish Tuesday night.

“This place has a tendency to isolate you,” said Obama when asked to describe life in the White House. The Obama administration offered the TODAY show a rare behind-the-scenes look at the presidential mansion including a live interview with Vice President Joe Biden. Tuesday’s broadcast was the latest effort by the White House to reach out to Americans through both traditional and new media.

Sign of the times

On Monday, the White House officially joined the popular and growing social media platform Snapchat in an effort to connect with younger Americans. The new account follows new Facebook and Twitter accounts created by the White House to enable more communication on social media platforms. Through the White House YouTube channel, viewers around the globe can get a sneak preview of Obama’s final address.
