5th Quarter: Area coaches on 5th Quarter tradition

5th Quarter Sports

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – It’s a mid-Michigan tradition: The 5th Quarter on Friday nights on 6 News at 11.

Tonight it begins its 25th season here at 6 News.

Not tough to figure out we are all excited about the start of the high school football season around here.

We have our first of two 5th Quarters this week, tonight at 11:15 and again tomorrow at the same time.

In fact, we have four 5th Quarters in the first two weeks of the season.

And this is a really special year for our show. The long-running Friday night staple in our community was something I inherited 14 years ago.

Former 6 sports director Dave Akerly was one of the show’s originators and the first host of the show and he, along with several 5th Quarter alumni, will join us in celebrating 25 years on the air in this community all season long.

All the past hosts and contributors are proud of this show’s heritage, as we are here and now.

And the local fans, players and coaches have felt the show’s long-standing impact as well.

“It’s a tradition, not just with you guys but all of Mid-Michigan and certainly here in Mason,” said Jerry Van Havel, Mason football coach. “After our games our whole community goes to City Limits on the edge of town and get something to eat and snack and bowl and everybody watches the 5th Quarter together.”

“Congratulations first to Channel 6 and them reaching that milestone,” adds Okemos head coach Jack Wallace. “I know I thoroughly enjoy it. I know our kids look forward to seeing the 5th Quarter.”

“Well it’s been on long enough where I remember watching it when I was playing so it’s been on awhile,” adds Pewamo-Westphalia coach Jeremy Miller. “But the 5th Quarter’s just an institution. Everybody stops what they’re doing, they stay up on Friday nights to watch the 5th Quarter. You talk to everybody and they talk about what they saw on the 5th Quarter last night. It’s how everybody gets their news.”

We appreciate those kind words from an assortment of area coaches. And it’s our pleasure. We’ll see you for the start of season number 25 and a walk down memory lane all season on the 5th Quarter.
