LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – Volunteers with the Lansing Model Railroad Club are moving an historic former railroad structure from Lansing’s Old Town neighborhood.
That tower, known as the “Michigan Avenue Tower”, used to control the junction between the Michigan Central and Pere Marquette railroads.
The tower is in rough shape so the club will fix it up and move it to Delta Township where it will be on permanent display on the club’s property.
Today the volunteers used a massive crane, and a very gentle touch, to lift the tower off its foundation and place it on a flatbed trailer for transportation.
Organizers say it’s important to preserve these pieces of history.
“Our club hopes to restore and put it into use where we can dispatch and operate our trains from this tower and be a living history document or artifact,” says Michael Frezell, president of the Lansing Model Railroad Club.
The club is looking for donations to help with the restoration project.
